Provenance

Description

A moment of minor. Variation 9 is unique in the G Major series: the claim explicitly identifies the triad as G minor — D4, Bb4, D5. Three notes, one octave, a bell arch that rises from D4 to D5 through the Bb4 at its midpoint. The span is the most intimate in the series: from an orange D4 to an orange D5, with a violet Bb4 between them.

The color family changes entirely. Where the rest of the series is built on G (red-orange), D (orange), and B (yellow-green), this étude introduces Bb (violet toward red-violet), the flattened third that defines the minor mode. The warm red-orange of D and the violet of Bb are close neighbors on the color wheel, giving the étude a warm but tense palette.

Lent, p, legato, four beats. Very slow, very soft, very small. Within the animated G Major series, this variation arrives as a whisper — a single arching gesture in the minor mode, barely an octave wide.
