Description

Four consecutive thirds. Variation 8 contains G2, B4, B5, B6, B7 — the root in the bass and then four ascending versions of B, climbing octave by octave to B7, the silver extreme. The étude is almost entirely the third of G Major, repeated and rising. It is a study in how one pitch sounds across the full range of the keyboard.

B7 is near-white — the highest register registers as silver or white in the chromesthetic mapping, a near-absence of color. The phrase climbs from the deep red-orange bass to this luminous extreme and hangs there suspended in triple time.

Animé, mp, legato. Five notes only, but the span is vast: five octaves from G2 to B7. Highlights dominate at over 57%. What this étude explores is the journey of a single pitch-class — B — as it transforms through register from warm mid-range yellow-green to near-white at the top.
