Description

Nine notes across five octaves — the widest opening in any series. The étude dips from Db4 down to the sub-bass at Db1, then climbs all the way to F6 at the top: an inverted bell, valley-shaped, Animé at a soft dynamic. The four-beat pulse keeps the wide span moving, legato binding the extremes together despite the distance between them.

The canvas is built on blue-green darkness. Two Db's sit in the lowest octaves, their color compressed almost to black. In the middle register, red-violet and blue appear where F and Ab hold the chord's third and fifth. But the eye is drawn to A5 — a warm orange accent, the non-chord tone that has no place in Db Major's cool palette, occupying a commanding share of the painting.

Db Major opens with a contradiction: a cool key invaded by warmth. The orange of that foreign A5 sits among the blue-greens and red-violets like a lit window in a dark street.
