Provenance

Description

The absent third. No F appears anywhere in this étude — the chord's red-violet is missing entirely. Eight notes, Lent, soft and legato, a bell arch from Db1 in the sub-bass to G5 at the crest. What remains is root and non-chord tones: four Db's anchoring the blue-green, and three G's in red-orange burning through the middle and upper register.

The painting is transformed. Without the red-violet third, the cool palette loses its warmth, and the red-orange accents of G3, G4, and G5 fill the gap — fire where there should be blue-green and blue. A yellow-green accent at B4 adds another warm note. The canvas becomes something unexpected: Db Major stripped of its defining color, replaced by a blaze of red-orange.

This is the only variation in the series that omits the third entirely. The chord becomes open and ambiguous — neither clearly major nor minor, just root and foreign tones in a slow, quiet bell.
