Db Major - Research on Harmony - Variation 10

The chord seen through blue glass. Ab4 commands a broad share of the canvas — the fifth of Db Major in its most saturated register, a vivid blue. Seven notes, Animé, mp, legato, an inverted bell that dips before rising to F6 at the pale extreme. The four-beat meter walks the phrase through its valley and back.

Blue-green toward black anchors the bass at Db2. In the midrange, red-violet and blue lean toward blue-violet where F3 and Ab4 hold the triad's warmth and depth. Two accents break through: yellow-orange at A4, yellow at E5 — brief warm flashes in an overwhelmingly cool painting. The fifth dominates everything, the blue of Ab4 spreading wide across the center.

Variation 7 belongs to the fifth. Where other études balance root, third, and fifth, this one lets the blue take over — the painting tinted by a single pitch's color, everything else secondary to that saturated blue presence.
