Provenance

Description

A piano étude translated into color. The Db Major 7 chord — Db, F, Ab, C — spreads across five octaves on the keyboard; here it spreads across the paper as a field of blues and blue-violets anchored by a warm red-orange mass in the upper register. That red-orange is C, the major seventh — absent from a plain Db Major triad, dominant here.
At the extremes, the voicing dissolves. The bass (Db1) darkens toward near-black; the upper voices bleach toward light. My color blindness compounds this at both ends — the chromatic identity of a pitch merges into its register. The full hue lives in the middle. Each variation is a study: direct, focused on the essential character of the chord.
