Description

The series closes with its coolest, bluest painting. Six notes, Animé, mp, ascending in triple time — a waltz that climbs from Db1 and Db2 in near-black sub-bass to Ab4 at the crest. The fifth floods the upper canvas in saturated blue, the most vivid single color in the series. No note rises above the fourth octave; the étude stays low and concentrated.

Blue-green toward black fills the bottom where the two low Db's sink into darkness. Ab3 and Ab4 dominate the upper portion — blue toward blue-violet, deep and saturated, the fifth of the chord given more space than in any other variation. A wide band of red-orange at G4 sits at the center, a non-chord accent that divides the bass darkness from the blue above.

Variation 12 is a painting of blues. Where the opening étude was invaded by warm orange, the closing one surrenders entirely to the cool end of the spectrum — Db Major arriving, at last, at the pure expression of its own temperature.
