Description

Six notes, Lent, the most compact span in the series — Db2 to D5, barely three octaves. The bell arch rises and folds within a narrow corridor. F appears twice, at F3 and F4, the third of the chord repeated in two adjacent octaves, red-violet the dominant presence in the painting's center.

The canvas is divided cleanly. Below, blue-green toward black where Db2 anchors the bass in darkness. In the middle, a broad field of red-violet where the two F's sit side by side. Above, the red-orange and orange accents of G4 and D5 — non-chord warmth at the crest. The compact range keeps these layers pressed together, closer than in any other variation.

Lent, mp, legato, four beats. The slow tempo and the tight span create something dense and intimate. Where other études spread across five or six octaves, Variation 4 stays small, the phrase folding over itself in a warm, close space.
