Db Major - Research on Harmony - Variation 12

The first waltz. Variation 8 breaks from the series' prevailing four-beat meter into triple time — Animé, mp, legato, ascending. Seven notes climb from Db2 to F6 at the pale summit, the phrase rising steadily without the fold-back of a bell. The waltz gives the ascent a lilting momentum, each measure swaying upward.

Blue-green toward gray opens the bass — not the deep black of other variations, but a softer, more muted gray in the low register. Red-violet and blue lean toward blue-violet in the midrange where F4 and Ab4 sit. An orange accent at D5 provides a single warm intrusion. At the top, F6 bleaches toward near-white, the third dissolving into pale light.

Among thirteen études, only three are waltzes, and this is the first. The shift to triple time changes the character of the line — where the four-beat études walk, this one dances, the ascending contour carrying the phrase upward in a quiet three-beat sway.
