Description

Triple time changes everything. Variation 2 shifts to three beats — the waltz — and with it, a different sense of motion enters the étude. Where the four-beat studies walk with an even tread, this one sways slightly, the pulse giving the ascending line a gentle lift as it climbs.

Ascending: the phrase begins at E1, black, and moves steadily upward — no valley, no dip — arriving at G#6 where it hangs suspended. This is the étude's climax and its resolution simultaneously: the line doesn't fold back, it simply rests at the peak. An orange accent, D3, surfaces near the bottom of the climb — a warm tension amid the yellows and blue-violets.

Animé, mp, legato. The animation is still present, but the triple meter softens the drive. Less march, more waltz. The painting holds the quality of a phrase remembered — something that rose and stopped, the echo still present in the upper register.
