Description
The loudest étude. Variation 9 is the only study in the E Major series marked mf — a clear, moderate presence, stronger than the mp and p dynamics elsewhere. Combined with the Animé tempo and triple meter, the energy is forward and assertive, the waltz stride widening.
The ascending shape returns: from E1 (black) the line climbs through eight notes to G#6, where the phrase hangs suspended. No non-chord tones — all eight notes belong to the E Major triad, the harmony uninterrupted from first to last. The pitch sequence moves through multiple roots (E1, E2) and thirds (G#3, G#4) before breaking into the upper register.
Animé, mf, legato, triple time. Shadow and highlights are balanced against a strong midtone center. This is Variation 9's particular quality: the chord stated fully and without hesitation, the dynamic making each note count, the waltz meter carrying the ascending line with warmth.
