E Major - Research on Harmony - Variation 5

Variation 5 is the only étude in the E Major series marked Modéré — 72 beats per minute, stepping back from the Animé drive that defines the rest. The change is felt immediately: where the neighboring variations move with animation, this one holds a different quality of calm, measured and unhurried.

The shape is still a valley — inverted bell — from E1 through seven notes to G#6, with D5 as an orange accent in the upper range. The soft dynamic (p) pairs with the measured tempo to give the painting a settled, contemplative quality. Shadow is minimal; midtones anchor the middle; highlights spread through the upper register.

Seven pitches, legato, four beats, gently pulsing. Within the animated series, Variation 5 pauses — not dramatically, but with a kind of quiet insistence. A single change of tempo, a single change of light.
