Description

Animated tempo, soft dynamic — the two pull in opposite directions. Variation 3 is marked Animé at 88 beats per minute, yet the dynamic is p, soft, with restraint. The étude moves with energy but speaks quietly: a tension built into the score's instruction, carried forward into the painting's color relationships.

The line traces a valley — inverted bell — from E1 (black) through the middle register, with D5 appearing as an orange accent in the upper midrange, a warm note outside the chord tones. Eight pitches in total, spanning from E1 to G#6, a generous arc across the keyboard that the soft dynamic keeps from asserting too loudly.

Highlights dominate the tonal balance, midtones follow, shadows are present but light. The painting holds considerable luminosity despite its restrained dynamic — as if the Animé tempo keeps the light moving even when the hand plays softly.
