Description

All three chord tones in vivid color — the only étude in the series where root, third, and fifth each appear at their most saturated. F#5 floods the canvas in clear green, the root at its purest. A#4 and A#5 carry violet in the middle — warm, reddish violet leaning toward red-violet rather than the pale tones of higher octaves. C#5 provides the fifth in blue-green, completing the triad in full chromesthetic saturation.

Seven notes, Animé, mf, ascending in triple time. F#1 anchors the sub-bass in black, then the phrase leaps upward. A#6 and A#7 dissolve into near-white at the top, the violet thinning to almost nothing. But the heart of the étude is in the middle register where all three colors hold their ground.

The mf dynamic — the strongest in an ascending variation — gives this waltz a confident presence. Where other études sacrifice color to register extremes, Variation 7 lets the triad speak in its natural voice. Green, violet, blue-green: F# Major heard clearly for once.
