Description

Soft and deep, with extreme reach. Variation 4 is the one valley in B Major — an inverted bell that dips to B2 (dark blue-violet) before rising all the way to D#7, the extreme high silver. Six notes, spanning B2 to D#7, a five-octave reach. The dynamic is p — the softest in the series — and the étude carries this wide span with restraint.

B2 reads as dark blue-violet in this étude rather than near-black — a cool, dark starting point rather than the absence of color. The valley dips into this blue-violet darkness before the phrase rises through the chord tones to the silver extreme of D#7. A yellow-orange A4 provides a single chromatic accent along the way.

Animé, p, legato, four beats. The contrast between the soft dynamic and the wide span gives the étude its particular quality: a whispered phrase claiming five octaves, the valley dipping into cool darkness before ascending to near-white.
