Description

The étude begins on the third. Variation 9 opens on D#2 — not B, the root, but D# (green in a dark register), the chord's third in the second octave. The étude begins on a non-root pitch, giving the opening a different harmonic weight and color. Eight notes, ascending waltz, from D#2 to D#5.

Three chromatic accents populate the phrase: yellow-orange, red-violet, and red — the richest accent palette after the opening étude. These warm-to-cool chromatic colors press against the yellow-green and blue-violet chord tones throughout the ascending line, creating a textured, complex color field despite the moderate dynamic.

Animé, mp, legato, triple time. Shadow and midtone share the balance, highlights restrained. The phrase climbs from the dark third (D#2, dark violet) to D#5 (blue-violet), root and third at the edges, accents filling the middle. Within B Major's predominantly ascending series, Variation 9 is the most chromatically dense.
