Description

The first bell, the first Lent. Variation 2 breaks from the series' ascending waltzes and introduces the bell contour at a slow tempo: Lent, 60 beats per minute, four beats. The line rises from B1 (near-black) to A5 (pale yellow-orange) at the crest, then folds back.

A5 is not a B Major tone — A is a half-step below the seventh, and here it registers as a warm yellow-orange accent, a tension at the arch's peak. Alongside it, two more warm accents color the phrase: a red-orange G4 and a yellow-orange somewhere in the sequence. The Bell's crest is reached through a chromatic color rather than a chord tone.

Seven notes, flowing, slow. The tonal balance here is even: shadow, midtone, and highlight each hold roughly a third. A meditative arch in the parallel major's warm palette, punctuated by the orange-warm accents that press at the harmony's edge.
