Every pitch belongs to the B Major triad. The étude is the most fully realized statement of the chord's own colors: yellow-green, green, blue-violet.

The span reaches B2 to D#7 — five octaves — the valley dipping to B2 (near-black) before rising all the way to the silver extreme. Nine notes inhabit this span, the chord's three pitch-classes cycling through multiple octaves: B at four registers, D# at three, F# once.
