Description

The only Modéré, the coolest accents. Variation 8 breaks from the Animé energy that dominates B Major and settles at Modéré — 72 beats per minute, four beats, a bell arch. Six notes, B2 to D#7, with two unusual chromatic accents: a red C5 and a red-violet F5.

Red and red-violet are cooler, more saturated colors than the warm orange and yellow-orange accents that appear in other B Major études. Here they push toward the crimson-magenta range, a different quality of tension against the yellow-green and blue-violet harmony. The arch rises from B2 (near-black) to D#7 (silver), carrying these cooler red tensions through the midrange.

Modéré, mp, legato. The measured tempo gives the bell arch a more deliberate character than the Animé waltzes. Within the B Major series, Variation 8 arrives as a moment of cooler color and slower pace — the single non-Animé study, its red and red-violet accents distinct from every other étude in the series.
