Description

Five notes, a descent in waltz time. The opening study of the Research on Harmony sequence strips Bb Major to its essentials: Bb1, Bb2, F3, D4, Bb5 — root, fifth, and third each appearing once, the chord stated cleanly across four octaves. Lent, mf, legato — the loudest dynamic in the series, a rare assertiveness in a collection that otherwise stays at mp or softer.

Two roots crowd the deep bass. Bb1 is violet compressed to near-black; Bb2 is dark violet, barely lighter. Together they build a heavy floor. F3 introduces the fifth as a warm red-violet in the lower-mid register, and D4 glows orange at the center — the single appearance of the third. Bb5 lifts the root into a brighter violet above.

Five pitches, three chord tones, no accents, no tensions. The étude is a clean statement — the Bb Major triad distributed across its range with nothing extra. The mf dynamic gives it a directness the other studies lack, the phrase descending with quiet authority.
