Description

The most populated étude in the series — nine notes spanning five octaves from Bb1 to D6. Animé, mp, legato, in four: the first departure from the slow waltzes that open the collection. The contour is an inverted bell, the phrase dipping to the sub-bass before climbing back — a valley, the line reaching down into Bb1's darkness and returning upward.

A yellow accent at E4 appears mid-phrase, a warm flash outside the chord. Against the surrounding violet and orange it reads as a bright interruption, brief but vivid. The bass is violet toward black at Bb1; F3 and F4 carry the fifth in red-violet through the lower-middle registers; orange warms the center at D4 and D5. D6 dissolves to pale orange at the top.

Variation 1 introduces both the animated tempo and the valley shape that will recur through the series. It also introduces chromatic tension — that yellow accent pulling the ear and the eye sideways from the chord's warm-dark core.
