Description

The closing study finds equilibrium. Seven notes trace a bell — Modéré, mp, legato, in four — the phrase arching from Bb1 up through the middle registers and out to D7. The contour rises and falls: the only true arch in the later variations, a symmetry the descents and valleys do not offer. Six octaves, all three chord tones present, the triad finally given its full shape.

Bb1 provides the dark anchor in violet toward black. D4 and D5 glow orange through the center, the third warm and saturated. F5 gives the fifth its most prominent appearance in red-violet — a rich, vivid hue that lets the fifth speak in its true chromesthetic color for the first time in the series. Bb4 cools the middle in violet. D6 and D7 fade to pale orange and near-white above.

Variation 9 closes the Bb Major series with balance. Root, third, and fifth each claim their register, no tone dominating, the triad resolved. An arch — rising and returning — as the final gesture.
