Description

Seven notes descending in waltz time, Lent, mp, legato — six octaves from Bb1 to D7, the same vast span as Variation 7 but with a denser interior. The third appears four times: D4, D5, D6, D7, each one lighter than the last, orange fading through the registers from saturated warmth to near-white. The fifth arrives twice, at F4 and F5, red-violet tones framing the middle.

Bb1 anchors the bass in violet compressed toward black. Above it, the canvas layers orange and red-violet in alternation — D4 then F4, D5 then F5 — the third and fifth trading positions as the phrase climbs. D6 is pale orange; D7 dissolves almost entirely. The upper canvas is dominated by the orange family thinning to brightness.

The most fully expressed descent in the series. Every chord tone is present across multiple octaves, the triad distributed evenly through the vertical space. Where Variation 7 gave the fifth a single appearance, Variation 8 lets it speak twice — the chord more balanced, the palette more complete.
