Description

The third climbs highest. Variation 3 pushes D to the seventh octave — D7, where orange bleaches to near-white — and the phrase rises from Bb2 through four appearances of the third: D5, D6, D7. An inverted bell in four, Modéré, mp, legato. The line dips to Bb2 before climbing, the valley's floor in violet toward dark red.

Five notes, no fifth. Like Variation 2, the chord stands on root and third alone, but here the span is enormous — five octaves from Bb2 to D7. Bb4 restates the root in the middle register as a warm violet, a single anchor amid the rising thirds. The upper canvas is dominated by the orange family fading toward silver: D5 saturated, D6 paler, D7 near-white.

Variation 3 is Bb Major reaching upward. The third claims every register above the bass, the palette progressively lighter, orange dissolving into brightness. A vertical étude — narrow in harmony, vast in range.
