Provenance

Description

The widest descent. Five notes fall from Bb1 to D7 in waltz time — Lent, mp, legato — spanning six octaves, the largest range of any waltz in the series. The contour descends: the phrase opens high in concept but the ear lands on Bb1 first, near-black violet in the sub-bass, then D4 and D5 glow orange through the middle, F5 adds a red-violet accent of the fifth, and D7 dissolves to near-white at the extreme top.

The fifth appears only once, at F5, a single red-violet moment in a phrase otherwise built entirely on root and third. Around it, the orange of D4, D5, and D7 dominates — three versions of the third spanning from saturated warmth to silver-pale. Bb1 holds the bottom in violet darkness.

A slow waltz stretched across six octaves. The étude gives the fifth just enough presence to complete the triad, then lets the third fill the rest of the space. Descent as breadth — the phrase falling not into confinement but into range.
