Description

Three notes. The most compact étude in the series: Bb2, D4, D5 — root once, third twice, the fifth entirely absent. Lent, p, legato, in four. The softest dynamic in the collection, a quiet statement bordering on a whisper. Two octaves separate the lowest pitch from the highest — a remarkably small span.

Bb2 is violet toward dark red in the low register, warm and muted. D4 and D5 are both orange — the third at its most saturated in the fourth octave, slightly paler in the fifth. The canvas is dominated by orange warmth, the violet root providing a single anchor below. No red-violet at all: without the fifth, the chord's cooler tones are absent.

A chord reduced to its barest gesture. Bb Major without F is root and third alone — violet and orange, darkness and warmth, the harmony leaning entirely on the interval of a major third. The quietest, smallest, most stripped-back study in the series.
