Provenance

Description

The darkest opening and the most complex harmony. Nine notes descend from Bb1 in an inverted bell — Animé, p, legato, in four — the phrase dipping into the sub-bass before rising through five octaves to D6. Three non-chord accents intrude: Ab4 in blue, Db5 in blue-green, E5 in yellow. Foreign colors pulling the chord sideways, the most chromatically tense étude in the series.

Bb1 and Bb2 build a heavy violet-black floor. D3 and F3 introduce the third and fifth low, both muted and dark. Then the accents arrive in the middle register — blue, blue-green, yellow — cool and bright interruptions against the surrounding violet and orange. Bb5 restates the root in a lighter violet above the tensions, and D6 dissolves to pale orange at the top.

Variation 5 is the series' one moment of genuine ambiguity. Where the other études state the triad cleanly, this one admits outside colors — the only study where non-chord tones hold significant ground, pulling Bb Major briefly toward something less certain.
