Description

Eight notes — the densest opening in any series. D1, D2, D3, F#3, A3, D4, F#4, A5: the étude clusters the roots in the bass before the line ascends, four D's stacked in consecutive octaves before F# and A rise above them. Orange toward black at the foundation, the cool seagreen of the third woven through the middle, warm yellow-orange at the top.

Played Modéré — a moderate, measured tempo, not the slow meditation of Lent but a pace with gentle forward motion. In four, legato, mp. The arch rises from D1 to A5 and folds back, the melody breathing across the full span of the keyboard.

This is the chord laid out before the series begins its inquiry — root, third, and fifth presented without omission, the complete harmony stated in its fullest form.
