Description

D0 — 18.35 Hz, the sub-bass of D, at the threshold where pitch becomes vibration. Its chromesthetic color is black so deep it barely registers as color. The étude begins there, in four, at mp — a foundational note that few pianos can produce, a physical event before it becomes sound.

Above it, D1 and D2 build the bass register, then D4 and A4 carry the chord through the middle before G#5 appears — blue, a foreign note near the crest — and A5 closes the arch. Seven notes, the melody rising from D0's near-absence through orange and into warm yellow-orange, with that single cool blue accent just before the peak.

Two unusual elements in one étude: the extreme low end and the foreign G#. The painting holds both — sub-bass darkness below and a cool inflection near the top.
