Description

No third. The étude moves through D1, D2, D3, D4, A4, D5 — five roots and a single fifth, nothing else. F# does not appear. The seagreen that defines D Major's distinctive character is entirely absent; what remains is orange in its many shades, from near-black at D1 to a warmer orange at D5, with one yellow-orange A4 in the middle.

Played softly, p, in four — the arch rising from D1 and returning. Without the third, the étude cannot confirm whether this chord is major or minor; it is harmonically open, the root and fifth forming a structure without a defining interior.

The canvas is warm and rootward, the colors all within the orange family. A painting without its most distinctive tone — the green note absent, its space given to the root's repetition.
