The tempo steps up — Modéré at 72, a waltz with a little more forward momentum than the meditative Lent. Six notes descending: A5 at the top, then A4, F#4, D4, A3, D2. The line falls in triple time, the upper register bright with yellow-orange and seagreen before the orange-gray of D2 closes the phrase.

No deep bass here — the étude stays between D2 and A5, three and a half octaves, the canvas lighter without the near-black of D1 or D0. The shadow budget is relatively balanced: gray-orange at the base rather than darkness, the palette more evenly distributed.

A descending waltz that doesn't reach the floor. The faster tempo makes the descent feel purposeful, the phrase arriving at D2 with direction rather than the settled gravity of the slower variations.
