Provenance

Description

Where the opening waltz kept to the chord's own colors, Variation 1 introduces foreign matter. Three chromatic tones infiltrate the bell arc: Db3 translates as blue-green, Gb3 as green, and B5 as yellow-green at the crest. Together they form a cool chromatic cluster near the base of the phrase, with the yellow-green B5 arriving at the summit as a tonal accent distinct from the orange-and-violet palette surrounding it. The series' most chromatically complex painting.

The shift from waltz to walking time brings a steadier, more deliberate step. The bell shape rises through the bass G's and the chromatic cluster, reaching B5 before falling back — a trajectory that pushes into unfamiliar territory on the way up, then releases on the descent. The moderate tempo gives each color its moment.

Twenty-four percent highlights place this among the brighter works of the early series, a quality driven largely by the yellow-green summit. The openness at the top is what the chromatic accents — gathered low in the arc, like preparation — make possible.
