Description

The painting opens the G minor series at its darkest. Six tones span a single chord — G1 to G4 — and the entire descent stays within the lowest registers of the piano, where red-orange, violet, and orange have not yet caught any light. The palette reads as near-lightless: eighty-two percent of the surface lives in the midtone band, with only a thread of brightness at the upper edge. There are no highlights to speak of.

A slow waltz carries the phrase. The melody begins at G4 and falls, one note at a time, through the chord tones toward G1 in the bass — a descent that has already decided its end before it begins. The legato touch keeps each transition seamless, the phrase moving with the quietness of something submerged.

This is the founding statement: the chord in its simplest, most earthbound form. No chromatic inflections, no extremes of register, no brightness borrowed from the upper octaves. What G minor looks like before the variations begin to open it outward is this — a close, low, waltz-paced settling into darkness.
