Description

The series closes with the chord in full. Three G's in the low register — G1, G2, G3 — form a dark red-orange foundation, the root stated three times in ascending order before the phrase opens into its upper range. Bb3 and Bb4 provide the violet tones, D4 and D5 the orange tones, and G5 arrives at the crest as the fourth and final G, closing the loop at the top of the phrase. The bell is complete: the chord travels from its lowest root to its highest, and every member of the triad is represented more than once.

The Modéré tempo at mf gives the closing statement authority without urgency. The phrase moves at an even, walking pace, neither hurrying nor lingering, stating its materials with the deliberateness of a formal close. Twenty-four percent shadows, twenty-five percent highlights, fifty-one percent midtones: a distribution of unusual balance, almost symmetric between dark and light.

This is the work the entire series was moving toward — the triad stated completely, at measured pace, across the full range of the piano. G minor, from floor to ceiling.
