Provenance

Description

The span is enormous. G1 to Bb7 covers nearly seven octaves — the widest arc in the early series — yet the painting holds almost no brightness. Three percent highlights. The Bb7 at the crest exists as a note, as a point of arrival, as the structural reason the bell can claim its full altitude; but in color, it barely surfaces from the prevailing darkness. Pale violet approaching white, yet absorbed almost entirely into the deep field of midtones and shadow below.

This paradox — extreme range with extreme suppression of light — gives Variation 2 its peculiar quality. The arc travels an immense distance and returns having collected almost nothing of the upper spectrum. The slow tempo makes the ascent feel measured, deliberate: each step of the bell is an event, and the arrival at Bb7 feels earned even as it barely registers as brightness.

Sixty-four percent midtones. The painting is built almost entirely from its interior field — the G1 shadow anchoring the base, and a vast spread of dark-to-medium tones filling the body of the work.
