Description

A waltz that has shed its bass. The opening study placed G1 at the bottom of its descending phrase; Variation 8 begins at D4 and moves within a compact upper range — D4, G4, Bb4, Bb5 — that never touches the low register. The descent moves across orange-gold and red-orange and mid-violet tones, without the weight of deep black below. It is the opening's lighter cousin: similar contour, similar meter, radically reduced range.

The moderate tempo distinguishes this from the series' Lent majority. A more forward-moving gait to the waltz: the phrase steps through its four notes with a clarity that the slow variations soften. The tonal descent from D4 through the chord to Bb5 — first the orange, then the red-orange, then the violet — is articulated clearly at this pace.

Seventy-one percent midtones. Most of the surface lives in the intermediate register, the four tones clustering in the zone where their families yield even-temperature color. Modest shadows at the base and modest highlights at the upper edge — a balanced, compact work that occupies the center of its palette without reaching toward either extreme.
