Description

Every other work in this series moves at Lent or Modéré. Variation 14 moves at Animé — the single fast study in a sequence built on slowness. The dynamic is mf, not the mp or p of every other variation: this is the single loud study as well. The combination of tempo and volume places it apart from its neighbors as a decisive formal event, the moment when the series' characteristic restraint breaks.

Nine tones ascend. Four Bb's — Bb2, Bb3, Bb4, Bb6 — climb through the violet family from near-black to pale, the sequential rise of a single color through four stages of its register. Three G's — G2, G3, G5 — distribute the red-orange across the phrase. D5 and Bb7 complete the upper end. The waltz time at Animé tempo acquires a momentum entirely different from the slow-waltz opening study: the phrase turns quickly, the notes arriving before the listener anticipates them.

Forty-one percent highlights, twenty-six percent shadows: the tonal spread is active and balanced. The palette neither leans heavily dark nor heavily bright — the energy of the ascending phrase is expressed through pace and volume, not through tonal extremity.
