Description

The series turns toward light. Variation 11 carries sixty percent highlights — the first work in the sequence where the upper register clearly dominates the composition's tonal balance. The descent does not travel from high to low as a falling away; it travels from pale mid-register tones down through warm orange and into the middle ground, a line that has already gathered brightness before its first step.

Five tones form the phrase: G2 anchors in the bass, then D4 and D5 build the orange middle, and Bb5 and Bb6 crown the arc with pale-to-light violet. The descent begins among these upper tones and releases through the lower ones, the waltz-time giving the line a gentle turning motion rather than a direct fall. Nine percent shadows: the bass is present but no longer governing.

This is the descending waltz again — the contour of the opening — but transformed. Where the opening study was eighty-two percent midtone, near-lightless, this variation reveals what happens when the same structure breathes in the other direction: a phrase that was once earthbound and dark now carries most of its weight above the middle line.
