Description

Three members of the G minor chord, each appearing twice at different heights. The two G's — G1 and the pair G3/G4 — anchor the bass and lower-middle of the arc, red-orange deepening to near-black at the root. The two Bb's — Bb6 and Bb7 — crown the upper register, pale violet at Bb6 shading toward the near-white silver of Bb7. Between them, D5 provides the single orange tone that bridges the palette from the warm bass to the cool upper field.

The arc is a continuous brightening. Thirty-eight percent highlights in this work — significantly more than Variation 2's three percent, despite an identical range and note count. Here the high Bb's are given room to register: soft dynamics opening the surface to more light, the piano palette releasing what Variation 2 withheld.

Forty-six percent midtones. The work is more evenly distributed than most of its neighbors, the arc genuinely spanning from shadow to light within six tones — a structural economy that nonetheless achieves a full chromatic climb.
