Description

Three D's mark the ascent. D3, D4, and D5 appear at consecutive octaves within the bell arc, each step an orange tone progressively lightening as it rises: D3 in deep warm orange, D4 in mid orange, D5 approaching gold. The three form a staircase that runs through the center of the phrase, the orange family tracked upward in register against the red-orange G's and violet Bb4. No accent tones are needed — the structure itself provides the harmonic interest.

Seventy percent highlights. The painting is among the brightest in the series, and the high D5 combined with the pale Bb4 in the upper range drives this luminosity. G2 — not G1 — provides the bass; the phrase has moved slightly off the floor, the lowest note now the second register rather than the first, giving the entire arc a small but perceptible upward shift.

Four percent shadows: the bass is minimal, barely present. Twenty-six percent midtones: a thin intermediate band. The work distributes its mass almost entirely in the upper half of the tonal range — a bell that rises high and stays there.
