Description

Three notes again — but the complete inversion of Variation 1's darkness. Where Variation 1 had 73% shadows and was the darkest work, Variation 8 has 73% highlights and is the brightest. Eb6, G5, C2: the waltz opens at Eb6 (light orange) and falls through G5 (red-orange) to C2 (black).

The three-note span covers four registers from Eb6 to C2. The étude is almost entirely light — the high Eb6 and G5 catch the palette's bright register while C2 sits as a lone dark anchor at the end. Three notes, wide spacing, the weight almost entirely in the upper registers.

Where Variation 2 (also three notes) was dark and close (C1, C2, G4), Variation 8 is bright and wide. The same minimalism at opposite ends of the tonal spectrum. C minor can occupy either extreme — the chord rendered as near-black or near-white depending on register.
