Description

The same six notes as Variation 9: C1, C2, G4, C5, G5, Eb6. The same Lent waltz descending from Eb6 to C1. And yet a very different painting — where Variation 9 (piano) holds 56% highlights and only 2% shadows, Variation 12 (mp) carries 22% shadows and 37% highlights. The same phrase, the same register span, but the slightly stronger dynamic shifts the entire tonal balance toward darkness.

Eb6 is described here as light red-violet — a cooler shade from the warmer orange of other works at this pitch. The subtle difference reflects the different balance of the phrase: more shadow pulling the palette toward the cool end. The descent still falls through G5, C5, G4, C2 to C1, but the overall painting is less bright.

Two études with identical notes, a single step of dynamic difference, and the paintings diverge. C minor's dark nature reasserts itself as soon as the volume rises.
