Description

The darkest étude in the series. Variation 1 carries mf — the only time — and 73% of its canvas is shadow, the heaviest darkness of any work here. Five notes, Lent, waltz: G4 (red-orange), then falling through Eb3 (violet), G3 (red-orange), C3 (dark red), C1 (black).

The mf dynamic gives the descent a declarative weight — this is not a quiet meditation but a clear, full-voiced statement of the chord falling through its registers. Yet Lent and legato hold the delivery slow; the loudness doesn't accelerate, it deepens. The waltz meter in three adds a lilting quality to the descent's gravity.

Only 0.8% highlights — the painting is nearly lightless. Red, blue-violet, and black account for almost everything. The waltz falls into darkness, G4's red-orange warmth dimming as the phrase drops toward C1.
