Description

The first slow étude in the series, and the warmest. Lent, mp, legato, bell contour, four beats — the tempo drops and the fifth opens wide. F appears three times — F3, F4, F5 — red-violet climbing through three octaves, darkening from muted red-violet in the bass to brighter coral tones as it rises. G4 adds red-orange heat beside D5's orange accent. Eight notes, the phrase arching from Bb2 to Bb5 and back.

Red-violet floods the canvas. Where most Bb minor études stay cool and violet, this one tilts toward warmth through the sheer repetition of F and the two non-chord accents. The root holds steady as gray-violet in the upper register; the minor third is absent from the painting entirely — no Db anywhere.

The missing third is the étude's defining absence. Without blue-green, the palette leans red-violet and orange — warmer than Bb minor usually allows, the slow tempo giving each warm tone room to breathe.
