Description

The widest registral gap in the series. Five notes pack tightly between Bb1 and F4, then nothing — four octaves of silence — before Db7 appears at the ceiling, near-white. F3 and F4 carry the fifth's red-violet as broad fields in the lower-middle register, the warmest tones in the phrase. Bb1 and Bb2 frame the bass in near-black violet. Lent, mp, legato, bell contour, four beats.

The canvas is intimate darkness below and a single distant white signal above. Blue-green toward green tints the middle where F3 sits, the fifth picking up a cooler hue than usual. The near-white Db7 at the top is the minor third stripped of all saturation — blue-green bleached to a vanishing point.

A painting of proximity and distance: the chord's weight clusters in the low registers while the third floats alone at the extreme, separated by silence. The gap between F4 and Db7 is the largest empty interval in any Bb minor étude.
