Provenance

Description

The bluest painting in the series. Db4 claims a large share of the canvas — the minor third at its most saturated, vivid blue-green that dominates the middle register. Bb4 renders the root as a cool blue beside it, an unusual reading where the root's violet tips toward blue. F5 carries the fifth's red-violet as a broad orchid-like field. Eight notes, Animé, mp, legato, triple time, ascending from Bb1 to Db7.

Blue-green, blue, orchid — the painting is cooler than Bb minor's already cool palette usually allows. The high Db6 extends the blue-green upward in a paler register; A5 adds a yellow-orange accent, metallic and thin. Near-white Db7 dissolves at the ceiling.

Variation 13 pushes the key's native coolness to its extreme. Where other études in the series find warmth through non-chord tones, this one stays resolutely cool — blue-green flooding the middle, the root itself turning blue, the entire canvas a study in cold luminosity.
