Description

Eleven notes — the most populated étude in the series, spanning six octaves from Bb1 to Db7. The phrase climbs steadily: Bb1 anchors in near-black, Bb3 and Bb4 carry the root through the midrange, F4 holds the fifth's red-violet, and the minor third fans out across Db4, Db5, Db6, and Db7 in a blue-green gradient from saturated to near-white. Non-chord visitors crowd in: D5 (orange), B5 (yellow-green), each adding warm and cool accents. Animé, mp, legato, triple time, ascending.

Every register is filled. The painting's density is unusual for this series — where most Bb minor études are sparse and dark, this one activates the full range. Blue-green dominates the upper half, violet the lower, with orange and yellow-green accents scattered through the middle.

The ascending waltz pushes relentlessly upward through the crowded phrase, each beat adding another note to the climb. Variation 12 is the series' most expansive statement — the full triad deployed across nearly every available octave.
