Description

The fifth in full force. F3, F4, and F5 state the fifth across three consecutive octaves — red-violet cascading from dark muted tones in the bass to warmer hues in the middle. Db4 provides the minor third's blue-green as a generous anchor, and Db6 and Db7 extend it upward in paler registers. Ten notes across six octaves, Animé, mf — the only forte-side dynamic in the series — legato, triple time, ascending.

The mf marking gives Variation 14 a declarative weight the other études lack. Ten notes fill the canvas densely: violet-black in the bass from Bb1 and Bb2, red-violet through the middle from the three F's, blue-green distributed above. D3 (orange) and B4 (yellow-green) add non-chord accents — earthy warmth and cool brightness interrupting the triad.

The loudest, most structurally complete late variation. The ascending waltz climbs with confidence through a fully inhabited range, the mf dynamic giving each note more presence than the series' habitual p and mp allow.
