Description

F minor's palette is built on three unusual colors: F as red-violet, Ab as blue (the minor third — distinctively cool), and C as red. The opening étude introduces this combination immediately in a valley shape, Animé, with normal articulation — the only study in the series where each note sounds separately rather than flowing legato. The distinct attacks give the phrase an exposed, articulated quality.

Five notes: F1, F2 (dark red-violet bass), Ab3 (blue), C4 (red), Ab6 (light at the crest). The valley dips to F1 before returning. Fifty-nine percent highlights — the Ab6 crest adding brightness above the shadows at F1.

The opening establishes the series' dominant temperament: Animé, forward-moving, valley-shaped. F minor's cool blue third will recur throughout as the chord's most distinctive element — not the warm orange or red-orange of other minor thirds, but blue.
