Description

The darkest bell in F minor — Modéré, mp, 46% shadows, only 5% highlights. Six notes, F1 to Ab6, the arch rising slowly under the Modéré tempo. The palette is heavy: red-violet in the bass, blue in the mid and upper range, almost no light at the top despite the Ab6 crest.

F1, F2, Ab3, C4, Ab4, Ab6: three Ab's ascending through three registers (Ab3, Ab4, Ab6), but the bass F1 and F2 keep the shadows dominant. The midtones carry most of the weight at 49%. Modéré sits between Lent and Animé — not quite slow, not quite fast — and here the unhurried pace keeps the blue of the chord dense and dark.

Variation 7 is the Modéré bell — one of two Modéré études in the series, both with unusual darkness relative to their register. The chord's blue deepens when the tempo is measured rather than energetic or meditative.
