Description

The first Lent bell in the series — a complete break after four consecutive Animé valleys. Variation 5 slows to 60 and traces an arch upward: F2 (dark bass) to Ab6 (light at the crest), legato, mp. The shift from forward-moving Animé to meditative Lent is audible in the painting's different weight.

Four notes: F2, C5, Ab5, Ab6. There is a large gap between F2 and C5 — two and a half octaves with no notes in between. The phrase leaps from the dark bass directly to the upper register, the arch having an unusual profile: a long silence implied between the root and the fifth.

The crest is Ab6 (light-toned), with Ab5 and C5 providing the upper portion of the arch. Forty-three percent shadows — the bass F2 keeping the painting anchored in darkness despite the bright upper register. A meditative counterpoint to the series' dominant Animé energy.
